Our Mission

Community Housing Developers, Inc. (CHD) sole mission is to increase and maintain the supply of quality, affordable housing to meet the needs of low- and moderate-income persons.

Throughout our 40-year history, our mission has not changed. Founded by a coalition of community groups, churches, and concerned individuals, among them current United States Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, CHD still continues to play a vital role in addressing the affordable housing crisis in the Bay Area.

In Santa Clara County alone, residential units are in such short supply, with less than one percent vacancy rate, and priced beyond the reach of many families and individuals. The average two-bedroom apartment rents for more than $2,900, while newly built luxury one-bedroom apartments rent for $2,500 or more. Single-family homes all over the Bay Area are beyond the reach of many would-be buyers, ranging from $750,000 to over $1.25 million and growing, according to industry reports.

CHD’s long record of achievement in developing, acquiring and rehabilitating more than 45 diverse projects throughout the Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, is only eclipsed by the nearly 90,000 low- and moderate-income individuals and families that we have assisted over the past 40 years. Part of CHD’s success lies in its ability to maintain good relations with neighbors, agencies, as well as local groups and organizations to move projects from inception to completion.
